WisdomTree identifies several themes with the potential to add extra alpha to portfolios, sharing the common denominator of capitalizing on the structural shifts reshaping global economies. In fact, the firm, celebrating 20 years of operations, believes that “we have entered the era of thematic investing,” as outlined in its investment outlook presentation document.
Mobeen Tahir, Thematic Strategist at WisdomTree, highlights first and foremost the new era of the space economy. In this section, Tahir points out that satellite development could unlock a broad spectrum of commercial space-related applications, ranging from global connectivity to climate disaster response, as well as e-commerce, autonomous navigation systems, critical financial system infrastructure, and aerospace intelligence. Here, he pointed to SpaceX as an example, which has accelerated space commercialization through increased launch frequency, enabling it to expand its share of total global launches. This has led to key outcomes, such as contributing to a decline in per-launch costs.
Ultimately, “space is re-emerging as a national priority,” both in the United States through initiatives such as the Artemis program, and in Europe via the European Space Agency’s (ESA) 2040 Strategy, among other programs, as well as in China, where the Chang’e lunar program stands out among others.
Also within the technology sphere, Tahir cites quantum computing as a second theme offering forward-looking opportunities. To begin with, quantum computing is advancing toward drug discovery at costs substantially lower than current levels. Yet that is merely the tip of the iceberg in this field, as the market shows strong enthusiasm for the space, evidenced by new initial public offerings of pure-play quantum computing companies such as Infleqtion, Xanadu, Horizon Quantum, IGM, or Pasqal.
As a third ascending trend, Tahir cited global electrification, noting that “renewable energy is driving it forward.” This expansion brings with it a fourth investment trend: metals, given that renewable energy requires large quantities of strategic metals. Consequently, nickel is projected to face a supply-demand imbalance around 2030, while lithium supply is expected to fall short of demand in under 10 years.
A fifth thematic investment trend outlined by Tahir was infrastructure tied to artificial intelligence, specifically cybersecurity and AI’s entry into the physical world through robotics: humanoids are beginning to transition from mere prototypes to large-scale deployment.
Commodities
Tahir also highlighted thematic investments across commodities. This asset class serves as “an effective hedging tool against unexpected inflation,” according to the expert, who explains that “third-generation indices reinforce the case for a strategic allocation to raw materials.”
Regarding crude oil, the expert noted that the EIA’s forecast of narrowing deficits depends heavily on the Middle East establishing alternative solutions to the ongoing Strait of Hormuz blockade. On gold, he expects it to reach 4,946 dollars per ounce on a one-year horizon, up from current levels of 4,000 dollars. “The precious metal’s recent pullback is a healthy reset. We like gold,” he noted. He also sees opportunities in silver, which could reach 74 dollars per ounce within 12 months.
The WisdomTree strategist also referenced agricultural commodities, which will largely feel the climate impacts of El Niño. “Investors are seeking to capture this trend through broad agricultural commodity baskets,” he explained.
