European Council President António Costa has stated that the process to find Lagarde's successor will begin immediately.

This appointment is likely to form part of a broader package of senior leadership roles at the ECB, which includes the Executive Board seat of Isabel Schnabel, who will step down in early January, and that of Chief Economist Philip Lane, whose departure is scheduled for May.

The former central bank governors of the Netherlands and Spain, Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernández de Cos, are widely regarded as the leading candidates to replace Lagarde.

None of the potential successors, despite possessing distinct profiles, is expected to alter the near-term path of interest rates.
