Aberdeen Asset Management

Aberdeen Asset Management

Aberdeen Asset Management is a global asset manager and a FTSE 100 company. Based in 25 countries with 33 offices, over 850 investment professionals and around 2,700 staff overall. Assets under management were $504.1 billion as at 31 December 2014.

As a pure asset manager, without the distractions of other financial services activities, it is able to concentrate all its resources on its core business. And it believes this is key to its performance. Assets are only managed for third parties, not its own balance sheet, which helps reduce conflicts of interest.

It dislikes unnecessary obscurity and complexity so its investment processes strive to be simple and clear.

It aims to seek out investments that display those qualities too. Finally, it focuses on taking a long-term view of its investments.

What it does

Its business is predominantly the active management of financial assets, using first-hand research to make investment decisions.

Active investment spans equities, fixed income securities and property, sharing resources and a common investment approach.

It has also developed a solutions business that can blend its abilities across different asset classes to provide tailored investment outcomes to meet specific client needs. This can incorporate skills in both quantitative equities and alternatives.

Its investment expertise is delivered through both segregated and pooled products – allowing it to serve a range of clients from institutions to private investors

Global reach, local understanding

Aberdeen values plain-speaking and common sense, so clients should find products straightforward and easy to understand.

It has found there’s an information advantage in understanding global markets from the local level up, with investment and client service staff based in or near the territories in which it invests.

Its 853 investment professionals in 25 countries provide a complete picture of financial market trends, risks and opportunities.

Close-knit teams, clear investment processes and flat structures are important to Aberdeen. As a group, it has the scale to provide global coverage of financial markets, yet it is small enough to focus on each and every portfolio decision.

Most of all, it aims to grow its clients’ assets in a way that’s sustainable. With well-resourced teams and clear processes, backed by a stable global business, it looks to be a long-term investment partner.

Clients include banks, national and corporate pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and other investment institutions, plus intermediaries managing money for private investors.
